HBO announces summer return, 7 episodes

HBO is officially confirming some major changes for
    Game of Thrones.

Season 7 of the fantasy sensation will not return until summer 2017 – pushing back from the show’s usual strategy of premiering each edition of the series in the spring (typically April).

Also, the network is confirming for the first time that next edition will consist of seven episodes (a pull back from the show’s usual 10 hours).

I'm alright with this news, since seven was the upper limit of what we could expect for episodes, and summer 2017 is actually less of a delay than I was expecting.

Having "Game of Thrones" to enjoy during the summer drought is actually probably preferable to having to fit it in with my regular season shows.

Spain must have given "Game of Thrones" some really good incentives; it seems like all of the Croatia filming for the southern climates has shifted to Spain instead.

The return of Iceland as a major shooting location isn't much of a surprise, given that winter has come now.

I figured they wouldn't get it on until the fall so I'm impressed it's only 3 or so months later than normal.

Great show, but OMG, do they think it's Avatar? All fans, take a nap for another year to wait for 6-7 episodes, then another year for the final season of 6-7 more episodes?

Yes, there is a lot of CGI, difficult location shooting, editing, etc. but they are really dragging this out.

Sometimes when things like this happen, you lose your fans, because they've moved on to other shows.

I honestly may just ignore it and give up.

I think it's safe to say that the vast majority of fans are sticking with it until the end. Heck, some of us have been reading the series since the 90s!

I'm so glad this is getting a proper managed story arc & not just stopping due to falling ratings, as so many shows do. It's on Sky Atlantic in the UK, & I don't receive that, so looking forward to seeing the Blu-ray of Season six around Christmas.

Okay, nobody laugh, like "Adam"

Just now finishing up season six. Really liking it, especially the big Knight protecting Cersei.

Haven't read any spoilers, but wow, those High Sparrow guys are so annoying, I certainly hope a few of their heads are lopped off.

I am one of those late watchers, too, Stan. We do not have HBO, and I have been borrowing the BDs from a friend each season. We have watched four episodes of Season 6 so far.

Once the series finally wraps up, I would like to pick up the complete series and then watch it through without the year long breaks. It is difficult to remember past happenings and who all the characters are with such long lapses between seasons.

So nice to know I'm not the only one. There are only so many hours in a day and so much good stuff now,

Not like the old days of VHS, now just push a few buttons and the DVR fills up with hundred of hours of films and TV shows. Tough to edit things down to what you really want to watch, but I'm getting brutal with the delete button now.

I still had "The Princess Bride" from last April. Zapped it. It's going to show up again eventually. "Spectre" and "Star Wars" The Force Awakens have been sitting there since September. I still haven't even started the new season of "The Librarians". That started November 20th. "Doctor Who" episodes from last February, I'm hopeless.

But three more episodes of "Game of Thrones" and the clean-up continues.

I think the most interesting thing about the fact that the final season will have only 6 episodes is that George must have either kept a lot of the details secret (and they'll remain un-filmed), or the showrunners are cutting a LOT. There is two massive books' worth of story to tell (plus the few bits from the already published novels), and the last season didn't actually go that far into "future book" territory. I doubt the seventh season will be able to tell over half of the remaining story (leaving the remainder for the final 6-episode eighth season).

The books will almost certainly remain the definitive version of George's story.
